- is produced by underground-mining, open-pit-mining or by the in-situ leaching method
- main producing countries are Canada, Australia, Uzbekistan, South-Africa, Kazakhstan and Russia
- production currently covers only 50% of the world demand of approx. 62,000 mt uranium.
- contains only 0.71 % of the fissionable isotope U235; not enough for most power reactors
